In 1961 Gunter Wasserfuhr formed GWI (Gunter Wasserfuhr Industrievertretungen) to represent one German supplier at Ford Motor Company in Cologne. Gunter continued to build on this by adding more supplier accounts and expanding the responsibility to Ford of Europe. In 1983 Gunter's son Ralf joined the company and is currently the sole director of GWI.

In 1988 GWI expanded their connection to the U.K. side of Ford by establishing ATS (Auto-Tech Services Limited) in Britain. At that time GWI and ATS represented the same suppliers.

Change and expansion has continued since then with GWI continuing to represent a number of suppliers to Ford Europe, but ATS however now represent a number of overseas suppliers to the whole of the U.K automotive and aerospace industries. In 1990 Ian Duncan joined ATS, becoming managing director in 2000, with Richard Mountford joining the company as Technical Manager in 2000.
